Reflection:
From writing my ode, I learned to appreciate foods like Olives that I didn't necessarily appreciate before. Even though we had fun with it saying things like "and I see the world reflected back," I really do have a new appreciation for food, and certainly cooks as well after I prepared over 60 empanadas for exhibition! I also learned a ton about my country, Argentina, and it's culture. I assumed before that every country had just one culture or terrain, when that actually couldn't be more wrong! Especially with Argentina (because it is such a large country) the terrain and cultures are extremely varied; from sunny coastline to glacier-tipped mountains...and the food in each region is as unique as the terrain! In this project, I am most proud of my ode, because I loved combining my love of poetry with the Spanish language!
Art and Language//Arte y Lengua
In this project, we learned about Spanish artists including Frida Khalo, Diego Rivera, and Salvador Dali. We then chose our own Spanish artist and created a piece of art that was influenced by them in at least two ways. We also studied art-related vocabulary and wrote Artist Declarations.

Reflection: I feel like I really connected to this project because it suited my interests quite a bit. I love both art and history, so I enjoyed studying Esteban and painting very much. From this project, I am really proud of the progress I made during the writing process, specifically with applying vocabulary and old concepts. I knew very little Spanish starting this year, and I was surprised that I could piece together an entire essay using less than 10 extra words. It made me realize how much progress I have been making and really motivated me to continue trying to learn the language and not just focusing on my grade. Overall I think that this was a great project that I enjoyed a lot.
The Poetry of Food//La Poesía de la Comida
In this project, we each were assigned a Spanish-speaking country to study (I chose Argentina). We then learned about Spanish-speaking geography, and chose a recipe from our country to translate. We then wrote odes (in Spanish) to an ingredient in our dishes, which we prepared and served at exhibition.

Ingredients:
Filling// Relleno:

pound beef steak: 1
libra carne de res

1/2 cup vegetable oil: 1/2 taza aceite vegetal

1 cup
chopped white onion 1
taza cebolla picada

cloves garlic, finely chopped 2

green onions, sliced 3

2 hard
boiled eggs, chopped 2
huevos cocidos

Dough// Masa:
·
2 1/2
teaspoons salt 2
½ cucharillas sal

3/4 cup water 1/2
to 3/4 taza agua

cup lard or vegetable shortening 3/4

Preparation:
For
the Filling:
1.
Chop
the beef into 1 cm. pieces.

Corta la carne en 1 pedazos de 1 centímetro.
2.
Cook
the garlic and the white onions in the oil until tender.
2.
Cocina el ajo y las cebollas blancas en el aceite hasta tierno.
3.
Add
the paprika, cumin, salt, and chili pepper, and stir well.
3. Añade
la paprika, el comino, la sal, y el ají, y revuelve.
4.
Add
the beef and cook until just browned. Add 1/2 to 1 cup water and simmer for
5-10 minutes more.
4.
Añade la carne y cocina hasta café. Añade ½ a un taza de agua y cocina a fuego
lento por 5-10 minutos.

Stir
in the green onions and sauté 1 minute more. Stir in green olives and hard
boiled eggs. Season with salt and pepper.

Chill
beef mixture for 2 to 24 hours.

Make the dough:
1.
Sift
the salt with the flour into a bowl.

Cut
the lard or shortening into the flour until well mixed. Slowly stir in the
water slowly.

Turn
the dough out onto a flat surface and knead, adding more water if necessary until
smooth.

Knead
the dough for 5 to 10 minutes, until it is smooth and stretchy, but not sticky.
Cover dough with a dish towel and let dough relax at room temperature for 30
minutes.

por 30 minutos.
Shape the empanandas:
1.
Heat
oven to 450 degrees.
1.
Caliente el horno a 450 grados.
2.
Roll
out half the dough very thin, to 1/4" thick. Cut the dough into 4-5 inch
rounds, using a large bowl or coffee can.
2. Estira
la mitad de la mesa hasta muy delgada. Corta la masa en 4-5“ media a la masa
delgado, 1-4". Corta la masa en 4’5" círculos con un recipiente tazón
grande.
3.
Place
1-2 tablespoons of filling in the middle of a dough round. Brush edges of
circle with water. Fold the round in half over the filling, and press down hard
along the edges to seal the empanada.
3. Pon
1-2 cucharadas del relleno en la masa. Roza los bordes de la masa con agua y
dobla el círculo por la mitad. Luego, aprieta los bordes para cerrar la
empanada.
4.
Bake
the empanadas for 10 minutes, then turn the temperature down to 400 degrees and
bake for 10-15 minutes more, until golden brown.

Mi mentor es
Esteban Vicente. Escogí a Esteban porque sus obras son abstractas y tienen muchos
colores luminosos. Mi artista es de Turégano, España. Mi artista hacía pinturas
y collages. Algunas características de las obras de Estaban Vicente son expresionismo
abstracto con formas incluso muchos rectángulos y cuadrados. El nombre de una
obra famosa es Red Field. Red Field
inclusa colores como rojo, naranja, y
rosa. Red Field también tiene una textura. Mucho del tiempo Esteban cortabais papel
prensa para pegar en sus obras, algo muy reconocible. A mí no me gusta que mi
mentor no dibujara retratos realistas pero a mi me encantan los colores en sus
obras.
Mi obra es una
pintura que tiene muchos colores incluso verde, rojo, azul, blanco, negro, y
amarillo. Mi obra es un retrato de una cara de una chica con pelo azul y
amarillo y otros raros colores. La chica tiene gafas de sol azules de papel
prensa. El fondo de mi obra es verde y tiene textura.
Una conexión que
me influí de Esteban Vicente es el uso de colores luminosos. También mi obra es
inspirada por el uso de papel prensa y collages en sus obras. Finalmente, mi
obra es inspirada por Esteban porque sus obras son influídas por la muerte de
su hija de cinco años, y mi obra tiene palabras tristes en las gafas de sol.

Born Not in the USA//Nacio No en los EEUU
The goal of this project was to write a children's story, in Spanish, depicting a 'day in the life' both here in Durango and what it would be in Todos Santos Cuchumatan, a small town in Guatemala. We wrote these in the present tense using grammar techniques and vocabulary we learned this semester. In my story, I incorporated a sub plot of me as a detective, solving the 'Case of the Lost Mittens (Durango) and Shoes (Todos Santos Cuchumatan)', and made it a choose your own adventure story!

We then read our stories to spanish-speaking children at Needham Elementary School. It was a lot of fun to talk with the kids, and neat to read them stories we wrote in Spanish. One of my kids even read my story herself! To interact with these kids who are far better at Spanish than I am was a very humbling and educational experience!

In regards to the project as a whole, I learned quite a bit about Spanish! Applying the concepts that we had learned this semester into an actual, cohesive story really hammered them home. Also, it forced me to understand them fully in order to write with them.
However, as challenging as it was to use the things we learned in our books, it came together easier than I expected! It kind of seems that I didn't fully realize how much I had learned until this project!
